ANNISTON (Nov. 14) — Weaver’s Lucia Balma and Donoho’s Pitts Angell both won four events to claim high-points honors while Oxford’s girls and Donoho’s boys won their respective Calhoun County team championships Monday night.

Balma repeated as the girls MVP by winning the 200 individual medley (2:46.27), 100 freestyle (1:04.81), 100 backstroke (1:15.81), and 100 butterfly in the Anniston YMCA pool. Angell, meanwhile, won the 200 individual medley (2:18.72); 50 freestyle (24.52); 100 breaststroke (1:18.84) and the 100 freestyle (54.38).

The Lady Yellow Jackets won the girls team title with 75 points. Donoho won the boys crown with 67 points.

This year’s championship meet was expected to be the most competitive in its history. More teams were involved in the races and the relays were taken out completely.

“Overall, it was a great opportunity to get up and race in preparation for sectionals in Birmingham this weekend,” Donoho coach Johnnie Pearson said.

White Plains’ Jacob Heath became the latest county swimmer to qualify for the Sectionals with his fourth-place finish in the boys 100 freestyle (1:00.00).

The others already qualified in individual events are Balma, Emma Levesque and Dylan Smith of Weaver; Cade Hilburn of Oxford; Elisabth Martin and Jacob Heath of Wellborn; Lance Leguerre of Wellborn and Donoho’s Angell.

Oxford girls also will have three relay teams and Donoho’s boys will have two in the sectionals at the Crossplex.
