BLOUNTSVILLE — Trent Lane scored touchdowns two ways and the Randolph County defense kept J.B. Pennington out of the end zone until the final 2:31 of the game.

The Region 5 Tigers (9-2), who’ve now won eight in a row, host Sylvania (8-3) in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs Friday.

Lane opened the scoring by catching a 7-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Prestridge and later scored on a 19-yard run.

Randolph County’s region had the best winning percentage in the regular-season and that trend seemingly continues into post-season play. Friday’s win completed a Class 3A Region 5 sweep of the opening round as top-ranked Piedmont, region runner-up Ohatchee and Weaver also won convincingly.

“Everybody talk about what a tough region we’re in and some are like ‘Yeah, right,’ but they sort of flexed their muscles tonight,” Ohatchee coach Scott Martin said.
