Oxford hits No. 3

Yellow Jackets grab highest ranking in eight years in statewide football poll; Piedmont, Ohatchee, Jacksonville all hold their spots

By East Alabama Sports Today

The Oxford Yellow Jackets moved into sole possession of first place in Class 6A Region 7 Friday night and today they hold their highest statewide ranking in eight years.

The Jackets moved up one spot to No. 3 in the Class 6A rankings, behind No. 1 Blount and Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa. It’s their highest ranking since being No. 3 this week in 2008 and the third time they’ve been ranked third since last being No. 1 on Sept. 9, 1994.

They should have no problem at least holding the spot, playing winless Fort Payne this week.

Piedmont, Ohatchee and Jacksonville all maintained their positions in the poll.

Piedmont remained No. 1 in Class 3A. Ohatchee remained No. 7 in Class 3A. Jacksonville remained No. 9 in Class 4A.

Among area teams, Etowah remained No. 4 in Class 5A, while Central-Clay County moved up a spot to No. 9. Munford remained No. 6 in Class 4A. Spring Garden held its highest-ever No. 3 ranking in Class 1A heading to its game this week at JCA, Wadley moved up a spot to No. 6 and Cedar Bluff moved up two spots to No. 7.
