Chaffin scores three TDs, Bowie scores two as Alexandria wins big in resumption of series with Tigers

It had been three years since long-standing rivals Alexandria and Cleburne County last met on the football field, but when they teams got together Friday night the Valley Cubs picked up where the series left off.
Grayson Chaffin rushed for 159 yards – all in the first half – and accounted for three touchdowns in the game as the Valley Cubs clobbered the visiting Tigers 55-28.
The Valley Cubs won the last two games before the last rare interruption and have now won eight of the last 10 meetings. They lead the series 42-19-1.
Chaffin scored on runs of 5 and 79 yards in the first half, and then returned the second half kickoff 85 yards for his third touchdown of the game. Quarterback Quentin Bowie had two touchdown runs and A.J. Martin returned an interception for another score as the Cubs opened a 35-0 halftime lead.
Martin also had a fumble recovery that led to Bowie’s second touchdown right before his big return.
All 333 yards of Alexandria’s total offense came on rushing. The Valley Cubs (2-3) did not throw a pass.
The Cubs’ defense held Cleburne County to 2-of-10 passing for five yards in the first half. The Tigers (2-3) were only 1-of-8 for one yard until their last possession of the second quarter and the pass they completed was a batted ball that was caught and carried for four yards.
Easton Clark was Cleburne County’s biggest offensive weapon. He rushed for 83 yards on 18 carries.
The 55 points were the most Alexandria has scored in the series since a 67-0 win in 1967.
