A game of 1-on-1?

If the pollsters cooperate, Friday’s game between Piedmont and Leeds could be the county’s first matchup between No. 1s in years

Of course, the voters in the statewide football poll have to cooperate, but if the pollsters don’t punish Leeds too badly for losing to Handley last week, Calhoun County could have its first football game between No. 1-ranked teams in as long as records have been kept on such things.
The big game this week involving Calhoun County teams is Piedmont-Leeds at the Field of Champions. Last week, the Bulldogs were No. 1 in Class 3A and Leeds was No. 1 in 4A.
Piedmont upheld its end by beating Pleasant Valley; Leeds lost. With that Leeds loss, Piedmont’s 15-game winning streak is now the longest active AHSAA winning streak in the state.
The Alabama High School Football Historical Society has documented teams’ record against ranked teams all the way back to 1984. Since 1990, there have been 21 games between two No. 1 teams; the team from the higher classification has won 16 times.
None of the games have involved teams from Calhoun County. No. 1 Piedmont beat Leeds 7-0 in a 1-2 game in 2012.
Leeds leads the series 6-3-1. The teams have split four games since they resumed the series in 2012.
Even if the Green Wave falls to No. 2 (or lower) because of the loss, what follows is some pretty good information.
