PV girls win again

Lady Raiders edge Alexandria, PV boys finish second in close race; Jacksonville’s Hearn win girls race

By East Alabama Sports Today

GADSDEN — The reigning state champion Pleasant Valley girls cross country team won for the second week in a row, PV’s boys finished second and Jacksonville’s Rebecca Hearn got a little payback in the Etowah County Trail Invitational at Noccalula Falls Saturday.

The Lady Raiders placed all five of their scorers in the top 12 counters and their first seven runners in the top 20 to score 35 points, 29 ahead of second-place an Alexandria team making its season debut.

Jacksonville Rebecca Hearn won the girls race in 21:09.91, beating PV’s Trinity Roberts to the wire by five seconds. Roberts and Hearn finished 1-2 last week at Oxford’s Waffle House Invitational. Alexandria’s Abby Nunnery was third.

PV had the tightest pack in the boys race — 76 seconds — and put all five of its scorers in the top 20, but LAMP’s first two finishers both hit the wire ahead of them and edged PV by seven points.

Southside’s Hunter Nails won the boys race in 18:02.17. Matisse Miller of PV’s top finisher; he finished sixth overall (19:38.45).

“I knew the girls race was just us and Alexandria,” PV coach Brad Hood said. “They have a passionate coach and team that loves to run. The boys race was as expected, but we had a shot to beat the two-time 4A state champs; we had it until the final sprint.

“We are just trying to get better by November. We are way ahead of where we were this time last year, but we have to be — we are not the best team in 3A. ACA is really fast, as usual, and have two new runners.”
