Alexandria, Piedmont, PV score victories on the diamond; Huskies, Warriors leads Gadsden-Oxford golf

BASEBALL

Alexandria 6, White Plains 1

Riley Shaw and Jacob Heathcock both went 3-for-4 and Cody Dodd pitched three innings of no-hit relief with seven strikeouts as the Valley Cubs won on Senior Night.

Shaw had singles in each of his last three at-bats. Heathcock doubled home the first run of the game in the first inning and singled home a run in the fifth.

Dodd followed Taylor Shaddix to the mound. She faced 11 hitters and didn’t allow a ball out of the infield. Shaddix gave up four hits and struck out four in four innings.

Piedmont 3, Cedar Bluff 0

PIEDMONT – The Bulldogs scored three runs in the sixth innings and three Piedmont pitchers scattered three singles and combined for eight strikeouts.

Easton Kirk broke a scoreless tie with an RBI double. The Bulldogs made it 2-0 on Deven Hincy’s bases-loaded walk and Ry Atkins singled in the third run.

Taylor Hayes, the last of Piedmont’s three pitchers, was credited with the victory. He pitched the final two innings behind Kirk and starter Caleb Morrow. Kirk also caught and played third in the game.

Pleasant Valley 11, Saks 1

JACKSONVILLE – Dakota Jones went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Drew Bonds and Tristan Salster both drove in two runs for the playoff-bound Raiders.

Jones tripled in the second inning and singled in the first and third. Salster had a two-run single in the first inning among his two hits. Nick Howard also had two hits.

Caden McCurdy and Brody Phillips gave up three hits in five innings and struck out six. Jalen Borders had two of Saks’ hits. The Wildcats’ run was unearned.

GOLF

GADSDEN — Dawson Atkinson shot 2-under-par 69 and Hewitt-Trussville counted four scores of 77 or better to grab a one-shot team lead after the first round of the Oxford-Gadsden Invitational at Gadsden Country Club.

The two-time defending champion Huskies shot 298 as a team. Westbrook Christian, with three scores in the 70s, shot 299. Atkinson leads Westbrook’s Harrison Martin in the medalist race by a shot.

Oxford, the only Calhoun County team in the field, is currently 11th. Will Turley posted the Yellow Jackets’ low round of the day, 76.

The event moves to a final round Tuesday at Cider Ridge Golf Club in Oxfordf with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
