Oxford park gets OVC tourney

League approves Choccolocco Park for softball tournament in 2016, 2017

OXFORD — The Ohio Valley Conference softball tournament will be held at a neutral site for the first time in its history and will be coming to Choccolocco Park to do it.

As expected, the Ohio Valley Conference board of ADs and presidents approved the conference softball tournament to be played at the new Choccolocco Park in 2016 and 2017.

The tournament will be played this year May 11-14 and in 2017 May 10-13.

“We are delighted to host our softball championship at a first-class even and are grateful for the support of the city leaders of Oxford,” OVC commissioner Beth DeBauche said in a news release.

The previous 22 years of the championship the event was held at the campus site of the No. 1 seed. There also is a hope the OVC Track & Field Championships could someday be held at the new facility; the league’s cross-country championship previously had been held at Oxford Lake.

The league currently has 12 softball playing schools: Austin Peay, Belmont, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Morehead State, Murray State, Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, Tennessee Tech and UT-Martin.

“We are excited to be printing the OVC Championship to Oxford and to what is a world-class softball facility,” Jax State softball coach Jana McGinnis said in a statement. “We are very lucky to be playing in this venue, which I believe will elevate our championship and take it to another level.

“The city of Oxford has worked very hard to get our league to make it the home of the OVC Softball Championship, and this is just the start of what is a bright future for softball at this facility.”
