An event that was a staple on the area golf calendar but missing in action the past few years is on its way back.

Gadsden Country Club is bringing back its Invitational June 17-19 – the weekend of Father’s Day and the U.S. Open.

“When I first started – even before I started – people asked if we were going to get it back,” head pro Matt Ganshaw said. “We’re going to give it a try and see how it goes.”

Two of a golf club’s marquee events every year are its Member-Guest and Invitational, but the invitational at Gadsden has been off the schedule for several years. It had regularly drawn a big group from Calhoun County. Details for this year’s tournament are pending.

“We want to put on a great event that people will mark on their calendar,” Ganshaw said.

THE ‘BIG’ EVENT: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calhoun County holds its three-person scramble April 30 at Indian Oaks Golf Club looking for an even bigger event the second time around.

Last year’s inaugural tournament drew 20 teams and raised nearly $3,000 for the organization. This year’s event has drawn nearly that many commitments already with a goal of pulling in 30 teams or more. Entry fee is $65 per player and all proceeds stay local.

Last year, Big Brothers Big Sisters served 227 children in Calhoun County with 144 matched with mentors.

Contact Roger Fair (283-3248), Kenny Wright (770-1800) or Ricky Joe Collins (343-2449) for entry and sponsorship details.

COUNTY TWO-MAN: Response for the Calhoun County Two-Man Championship March 12-13 at Silver Lakes has been strong, but spots are still available.

The format is a first-round scramble on Backbreaker/Heartbreaker and a scamble the second round on the same nines.

Entry fee is $125 per player, which includes golf, carts, range ball and prizes. Tee times start at 8:30 a.m. each day. Call the golf course (892-3268) for the details.

The Calhoun County Golf Tour awards banquet is scheduled for March 12 at Heroes Bar & Grille. All the players in last season’s Top 16 of the points standings should have received information on the event. Those yet to RSVP should contact Jeremy McGatha (310-2282).
