WEAVER – If you saw Giovanni Mosley on the basketball floor Monday, you’d seriously wonder how he might ever play the rest of the week.

The Weaver guard walked gingerly across the floor with his body bent at an odd angle to avoid the pain in his neck and back. The only way he could turn his head to look around was to turn his entire body in the direction he wanted to see.

“I can’t believe he played,” Bearcats coach Daryl Hamby said. “He kind of looked like the Hunchback of Notre Dame trying to play.”

It was all he could do to play against Piedmont that night in what amounted to the area regular-season championship game. He muddled through with eight points.

Fast forward to Thursday. Mosley was on the floor again, this time showing no signs of whatever was hurting him earlier in the week. He hit four 3-pointers – three in the second half — on the way to 14 points that helped the Bearcats beat Ohatchee 57-43.

“I felt more relaxed that I could turn my body each way now,’ he said. “I didn’t have to turn it all the way the opposite way to go right or left.

“When I shot when I had the crick in my neck I could feel it in my back and wasn’t able to shoot. So, when it was gone, I didn’t feel anything, so I could take my normal shot.”

Hamby thought the player might have strained something during one of his vigorous workouts in the weight room. As best as Mosley could figure it came from an awkward position when he slept.

Whatever the cause, it was gone now and he became a pain in the neck to the Indians.

His first 3-pointer opened the scoring and the Bearcats never lost the lead. His second sent them into the fourth quarter with a 17-point lead. He shared game-high scoring honors with Ohatchee’s Micah Lee.
