Saks breaks into poll

Lady Wildcats No. 10 in 4A girls poll; boys county champ Anniston, White Plains, Sacred Heart, PV girls also in

By East Alabama Sports Today

Perhaps now people will start taking the Saks girls basketball team a little more seriously.

Fresh off their respective Calhoun County Tournament championships, the Saks girls and Anniston boys are both in the statewide basketball poll this week.

Saks (19-6) broke into the poll for the first time this season at No. 10 in the Class 4A girls. Anniston (17-3), which won an eighth County Tournament title for retiring coach Schuessler Ware, is back in the 5A boys poll at No. 8.

Despite an 11-game winning streak and six-game sweep through their area, Saks coach Michelle Lively said Tuesday she sensed people didn’t recognize the Lady Wildcats as a dominant team. Perhaps a spot in the poll will change some of that thinking.

They aren’t the only Calhoun County teams in the poll.

White Plains, which clinched its area regular-season title Tuesday, is No. 10 in the 4A boys poll. Sacred Heart (20-8), which lost to Anniston in the boys county final, remains No. 1 in 1A. Pleasant Valley remains No. 10 in the Class 3A girls poll.
