Pleasant Valley and Wellborn played one of the highest scoring girls games in the county this season and the Lady Raiders had just enough when it was over to rally from an early deficit and claim a share of the Class 3A Area 12 title.

The Lady Raiders and Piedmont tied for the regular-season championship and a coin flip is in order to decide who will host the area tournament.

“I don’t know anything about it yet,” PV coach Brad Hood said. “I’m going to ask (Piedmont coach Terrace Ridley) if she wants to play tomorrow to break the tie.”

The coin toss was Tuesday morning and Pleasant Valley won it — the Lady Raiders called heads — meaning it will host and play No. 4 Weaver. Piedmont will play Wellborn in the other semifinal.

The teams combined for 154 points, which Hood reported were the most combined points of any game – boys or girls — in the county this season. Hood called the closing minutes a “whirlwind,” the teams were scoring so fast.

The Lady Raiders were down by 11 at one point in the game, by nine at halftime. They went back to their regular press break with Kara Perry inbounding the ball and that seemed to help steady them.

Wellborn’s Vanessa Carter led all scorers with 31 points. Atleigh Brannon led PV with 28 and Perry added 21.

“They had a lot go their way and a lot didn’t go ours,” Hood said. “It’d have been easy to drop one tonight. This one is a win of perseverance that can take you to the next level. It’s one that really can have your team believing they can do what they have to do to win. Everything was against us. We stuck with it.”

Jefferson Christian 44, Faith Christian 40: The Lady Lions rallied from a big early deficit to get within two late but couldn’t get the tying basket, then had to foul at the end to give them a chance.

The Lady Eagles scored the first eight points of the game and opened a 14-1 lead before Faith scored its first field goal.

JCA’s Ashley Bradley led all scorers with 26 points. Madison Stephens led Faith with 17.

“We had a couple chances in the fourth quarter,” Faith coach Bradley Dawson said. “You cannot win when you miss as many free throws and layups as we did.”

Jacksonville 47, Cleburne County 45: The Golden Eagles used a big fourth quarter to push past the Lady Tigers in this area game in Heflin. Jacksonville trailed 36-31 going into the fourth quarter after leading by one at halftime.

Dasia Kirksey scored 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished four assists to lead Jacksonville. Kelsey Ervin had 10 points and five rebounds. Cleburne County’s Shawntavia Boyd led all scorers with 23 points.

Spring Garden’s Rogers signs

Spring Garden dominating post Tykeah Rogers will continue her basketball career at the next level at Faulkner after signing with the school Monday.

“It’s indescribable,” Rogers said. “I’m just happy I get to go somewhere and play, get to meet new people and have a new team.”

Rogers said she was impressed with the Faulkner team’s togetherness.
