Sylacauga wins two close games for boys title, Talladega wins girls crown

LINCOLN — Tournament MVP Antwane Cook hit a tie-breaking free throw with eight seconds left and Talladega couldn’t get a last-second shot as Sylacauga won the Talladega County Tournament title with a 72-71 victory.
Sylacauga won two close games to win the title; the fifth-seeded Aggies stunned top-seeded Childersburg 66-65 in an earlier semifinal moved to Saturday because of inclement weather.
Talladega was playing in its 12th straight county championship game and for its fourth straight county title.
Top-seeded Talladega won the girls championship, beating No. 3 Sylacauga 61-42.
Cook finished with 23 points in the boys championship game; he had 14, including four of his six 3-pointers, in the Aggies’ 30-point third quarter. Ashton Duncan had 23 and defensive MVP Jay Smoot had 20 for Talladega.
