The new year has shined a new light on Calhoun County basketball.

Four boys teams and one girls teams are in their respective top 10s in the statewide prep poll released Wednesday night. Three other teams were nominated for consideration.

Sacred Heart, the top seeded boys team in the upcoming Calhoun County Tournament, remains No. 1 in Class 1A. White Plains makes its first appearance of the season in the Class 4A poll at No. 8. Anniston and Alexandria are ranked 5 and 8, respectively in Class 5A.

Pleasant Valley is the only girls team in top 10; the Lady Raiders, riding an eight-game winning streak, remains No. 10 in Class 3A.

Piedmont’s boys were nominated in Class 3A, Saks’ girls was nominated in Class 4A and Anniston was nominated in 5A.

Lincoln’s inclusion in the Class 5A boys poll – No. 9 — marks the Golden Bears’ first appearance in the top 10 since 2000, the last year Ricky Rutledge coached the team. His son, Rush, has the team back in the poll.

“Thankful just to get noticed,” Rush said of his team’s inclusion. “Now, we just have to back it up with our play.”

With Anniston, Alexandria and Lincoln all in the Class 5A poll, one could make the argument Area 12 is one of the most competitive in the state this year.

“Night in and night out our area is very tough,” Rutledge said. “There is no room for error.”
