Pleasant Valley sweeps Gaston

Boys overcome adversity to score true road win, girls win eighth straight

By East Alabama Sports Today

GADSDEN – The Pleasant Valley boys overcame a multitude of adversity Monday to earn their first true road win of the season, 58-50 over Gaston.

The Raiders played what coach Ryan McCoy said “may have been the best two quarters we played all year” in the first and third periods, but still needed to come an even earlier start than planned on the road and foul disparities in the second and fourth quarters.

“I thought it was a good day for them to learn and get over the hump,” McCoy said. “Hopefully we’re getting somewhere with the whole process.”

Josh Preston and Reid Hightower led the Raiders with 16 points apiece. McCoy also credited the play of Josh Faucett for things running smoothly on the floor against the Bulldogs’ man defense.

Riley Vernon hit both of his 3-pointers and Faucett scored six of his eight points in the first quarter as the Raiders jumped out to a 20-6 lead. Gaston rallied to gain a halftime tie, but the Raiders came out fast against in the third quarter and regained a 10-point lead.

“It all fed off our defense,” McCoy said of the two big quarters. “It set our offense. We got out in the open floor and made some good decisions.”

In the girls game, Atleigh Brannon scored 12 of her game-high 29 points in a 30-point first quarter that carried the Lady Raiders to their eighth straight victory, 60-21. Mckinley Parris scored 10 of her 15 in the first quarter.

“We all shot really good tonight and the posts rebounded really well,” Brannon said. “We’re all coming together as a team. We work together really well. I just hope we peak at the right time.”

Even though she singled-handedly outscored the Bulldogs, Brannon refused to take all the credit for the victory.

“My shots were falling tonight, but my team is more important than me,” Brannon said. “We’re a team so we all work together.”
