Local wrestlers dot rankings

Two dozen wrestlers from Calhoun and Cleburne counties have made the first installment of Class 1A-5A rankings by Southeast Wrestling

Two dozen wrestlers from Calhoun and Cleburne Counties have made it into the first installment of the Class 1A-5A wrestling rankings by Southeast Wrestling.

The website ranks the top eight wrestlers in each weight class.

Seven schools are represented. Alexandria and Weaver each have six wrestlers in the rankings, Ohatchee has five.

“It’s real competitive in our area,” Weaver coach Andy Fulmer said. “There’s a lot of really good wrestling here.”

Alexandria dominates the lower weight classes with two No. 1s (106 Jimmy Wilson, 113 Lane Trapp) and a No. 3 (120 Fletcher Swindall). Freshman Christian Knop is No. 2 at 170.

Weaver dominates the upper weights with one No. 1 (195 Chase Rodgers) and two No. 3s (182 Collin Allison, 285 Caleb Allison). Nick Souder is No. 2 at 120.

“I’ve told my guys not to pay attention to that,” Fulmer said. “Want them to stay humble.”

Ohatchee has two No. 4 wrestlers (132 Josh Sexton, 220 Caleb Montgomery)
two No. 8s (160 Hayden Pitts, 182 Kane Pitts) and a No. 6 (106 Reed Hill) Reed is one of only three eighth-graders in the rankings.

106 — 1. Jimmy Wilson, Alexandria; 6. Reed Hill, Ohatchee; 8. Dylan Turner, Cleburne County.

113 — 1. Lane Trapp, Alexandria; 8. Henry Bailey, Ranburne.

120 – 2. Nick Souder, Weaver; 3. Fletcher Swindall, Alexandria; 7. Brady Rinehard, Wellborn.

126 – 5. Matthew Schmaltz, Alexandria; 7. Preston Jarrell, Cleburne County.

132 – 4. Josh Sexton, Ohatchee.

145 — 6. Kyle Clapper, Weaver.

160 – 1. Tyler Mayfield, Cleburne County; 8. Hayden Pitts, Ohatchee.

170 – 2. Christian Knop, Alexandria; 8. Dalton Wiggins, Ranburne.

182 – 3. Collin Allison, Weaver; 8. Kane Pitts, Ohatchee.

195 – 1. Chase Rodgers. Weaver.

220 – 4. Caleb Montgomery, Ohatchee; 6. Matt Elston, Weaver; 8. Jack McCormick, Alexandria.

285 – 3. Caleb Allison, Weaver; 8. Jamie Crutcher, Piedmont.

In action on the mat Thursday …

Alexandria split with Leeds and Gadsden City. The Valley Cubs swamped Gadsden City 66-12 and lost to Leeds 45-33. Christian Knop won a two-point decision over No. 5 Arthur Patton of Leeds to remain undefeated (20-0).

Weaver swept its three matches, beating Piedmont (70-12), Oxford (52-26) and Darlington, Ga. (59-17). The Bearcats improved to 14-3 in dual matches this season.
