HEFLIN – Pleasant Valley ran into foul trouble all game and when it needed to have scorers on the floor in the closing seconds for the game-tying or winning basket, they were seated next to coach Brad Hood on the bench.

Cleburne County handed the Lady Raiders their first loss of the season 40-38 Friday.

Three PV starters – and three-quarters of its season scoring to date — had fouled out of the game by the time the Lady Raiders (7-1) went looking for the tying basket in the final minute.

They had three shots under the basket in the final minute, but missed the mark on them all.

“We needed a little humbling,” Hood said. “Tired of hearing how good we were supposed to be.”

Cleburne County’s Chelsea Parker was the only player in the game to score in double figures; she had 12.

The foul trouble and the way PV had to play because of it limited leading scorer Atleigh Brannon’s production. She scored nine points in the game and failed to hit the 1,000-point career threshold.

She’ll need five points when the Lady Raiders play Wellborn Tuesday night in their area opener.

Talladega 47, Anniston 45

Camille Buchanon scored back-to-back baskets in the post midway through the fourth quarter to give Talladega a five-point lead and the Lady Tigers held on to hand Anniston its first loss of the season.

The Lady Bulldogs (3-1) certainly had their chances. Raven Cooley, who kept her team close with her 3-point shooting, missed three shots from behind the arc and the Lady Bulldogs missed three free throws in the final minute.

They did have the last shot, but J’Kyra Clemons appeared to lose track of the time and fired up a shot from three-quarters court with about three seconds to play.

Cooley hit five 3-pointers in the game and led Anniston with 19 points. Buckhanon led all scorers with 20.

Oxford 59, White Plains 48

Jordan Smith scored seven of her game-high 19 points in the third quarter and Winter Taylor scored 11 of her 13 in the second half as the Lady Jackets rallied from a halftime deficit.

Makayla Kidd kept Oxford close in the first half with all eight of her points. Taylor, who played all 32 minutes, grabbed 11 rebounds.
Shelby Wood led White Plains with 18 points.

Glencoe 39, Ohatchee 34

OHATCHEE – Breia Little scored 12 and Glencoe hit nine of its 15 free throws in the fourth quarter to slide past Ohatchee. The Lady Jackets were 15 of 30 from the line in the game, nine of 16 in the fourth quarter.

Ally McCoy led Ohatchee with 13 points, which included three 3-pointers.
