Oxford on a roll

Yellow Jackets use balanced scoring, 16-0 run early in second half to handle Shelby County; Sacred Heart wins

OXFORD — When the Oxford basketball team gets on a roll there’s no telling when it’s going to end.

The Yellow Jackets scored 16 straight points early in the third quarter to take control of a tight game and run away from Shelby County 73-51 at the Oxford Sports Arena Saturday night.

They used a similar run in the fourth quarter to achieve similar results in their win over Southside Tuesday night.

Shelby County had just made it a 29-26 game when the Jackets (2-1) went on the run that put it out of reach.

Querriun Mason had six of his 12 points in the run, Jalen Moore had four and Torry Robertson and Jacob Baker each hit a 3-pointer. Moore finished with a team-high 14 points, Robertson and Mason each had 12.

“Torry Robertson is what makes us go, and he did a great job tonight,” Oxford coach Joel VanMeter said. “And it was good to see Jakolbie (McClendon) bounce back after the game he had on Friday.”

McClendon had 13 points.

Another element that kept the Jackets out front was their free throw shooting. Oxford was 17 of 24 from the free throw line – all in the second half. Robertson was 7 for 10, while Moore and Mason were both 4 of 5.

“We hit our free throws,” VanMeter said. “We’ve been emphasizing that they needed to step up, be a man and start making them.”
