Hearn, Alexandria win county girls race; Lunsford, PV win boys race

OXFORD — All Rebecca Hearn wanted to do was get to the line first. she wasn’t worried about a specific time, winning the race was the only objective.
The Jacksonville sophomore won the Calhoun County girls cross country championship Tuesday in a time of 20:16.52. She led wire to wire and won by 11 seconds over Alexandria’s Chloe Brown.
“I kept saying in my mind how awesome it’d be to be two-time county champion. That’s been pushing me all week,” Hearn said.
It was a double repeat winner, as Anniston senior Zebedee Lunsford made a strong final kick in winning the boys race in 17:16.57.
Pleasant Valley won the team race putting all five runners in the top 15 and scoring 46 points. Oxford was second.
Alexandria won the team title in a close race. The Lady Cubs’ top runners placed 2-3-7-8 and the team scored 37 points. Pleasant Valley had 4-5-6 and scored 40.
“We almost slayed the giant,” PV coach Brad Hood said.
