Weaver loses heartbreaker

Ozmint keys Glencoe comeback with two second-half touchdowns; Weaver misses late FG attempt, will open playoffs on road

By East Alabama Sports Today

WEAVER – Pace Ozmint rushed for 123 yards and two second-half touchdowns and Glencoe held its breath as Riley Benavides missed a 25-yard field goal with 2:02 left to beat Weaver 15-14 and secure an opening-round home playoff game.

Weaver needed the win to have a chance to play Piedmont for the region title next week. Instead, with the outcome of the game, Piedmont and Glencoe will both have opening-round playoff games at home, while Wellborn and Weaver will both be playing first-round games on the road.

Both of Ozmint’s touchdown runs came from 1 yard. His second, with 3:43 to play, capped a short drive after Ozmint recovered a Weaver fumble and gave the Yellow Jackets their first lead since 3-0 early in the first quarter.

Both Glencoe touchdowns, in fact, came on short fields after fumble recoveries.

The Jackets’ two-point coversion attempt failed, meaning all Weaver had to do was kick of a field goal to win.

The Bearcats took the ensuing possession and reached the Glencoe 16. They had it fourth-and-2 from the 8 when coach Daryl Hamby sent Benavides to kick. The attempt was wide right.

The Yellow Jackets took over and ran out the clock with two plays.

Weaver found it hard to get yards on the ground, but quarterback Dalton Hamby completed 10 of 16 passes for 185 yards. Hamby threw an 89-yard touchdown pass to Maurice Goodman that gave Weaver a 14-3 lead with 1:44 left in the first half.

Goodman caught four passes for 134 yards.
