Oxford splits four matches Saturday in Blalock Tournament; Donoho wins at West End

HOMEWOOD — A long week that started with winning the Calhoun County Tournament in dramatic fashion ended Saturday with a split of four matches in the Margaret Blalock Tournament.
The tenth-ranked Yellow Jackets were sent into their fall break with a 25-15, 30-28 setback to No. 4-5A St. Paul in the Silver Bracket semifinals. Also during the day they defeated Hewitt-Trussville (32-30, 25-21) and Austin (25-23, 28-26), and also lost to No. 1-6A John Carroll (25-10, 25-20).
Now they’re off until Saturday when they play at Pleasant Valley in a rematch of their five-set win for the county title as part of a round-robin quad match with Alexandria and White Plains.
“They are tired and it definitely shows on the court; we just can’t find a rhythm right now,” Jackets assistant coach Rachel Poe said. “We are off for fall break and are giving the girls off until Friday to hopefully get rested and over illnesses several have.”

Donoho wins at West End
WALNUT GROVE — The fourth-ranked Lady Falcons (34-8) swept through five opponents in straight sets to win the West End Tournament for their first tournament title of the season. They defeated Etowah in the final 25-22, 25-9.
Along the way they also defeated Boaz (25-19, 25-23), Hokes Bluff (25-14, 25-10) and Crossville twice (25-15, 25-18 and 25-14, 25-22 in the semifinals).
