White Plains gets Faith again

Lady Wildcats down Lady Lions in five-set rematch of Calhoun County Tournament opener

By East Alabama Sports Today

Calhoun County volleyball teams were afforded the opportunity to play during the County Tournament and White Plains took advantage of it to score another victory.

The Lady Wildcats had a rematch with Faith Christian – their first-round County Tournament opponent – and rallied to win 3-2 after dropping the first two sets. The game scores were 19-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-20, 15-13.

“We celebrated Senior Night, so I feel like we were emotional to start the match,” White Plains coach Joi Watts said. “Faith came ready to play and did some really nice things the entire match.

“Coach (Bradley) Dawson is building a really good program there; those girls compete at a high level. It was a fun match on both sides of the net.

Carsyn Morrow had 16 kills and three blocks for White Plains (15-11), who won the 8-vs.-9 County Tournament matchup Saturday in four sets. Ryleigh Randall had 34 assists and two aces. Haley Helms had 36 digs and five aces. Korie Burgess had 21 digs and six aces. Landry Bussey had seven kills and three blocks.

Cornelia Simpson and Madison Stephens led Faith. Simpson had 22 kills, seven blocks and 20 digs, while Stephens had 24 kills, 30 digs and seven blocks.

Abby Emerson had 58 assists and 15 digs, Nicole Frechette had seven kills and 35 digs, and Abby Kazajian had 24 digs.

While White Plains and Faith Christian were doing battle, Oxford and Pleasant Valley were fighting it out in Jacksonville for the County Tournament title.

Bussey was White Plains’ representative on the County Tournament all-tournament team.

“She’s a bright and rising sophomore,” Watts said. “I’m lucky in that aspect that she’s still growing and learning. She’s a very coachable kid who works hard all the time.”
