4 county teams sweep foes

Saks, Donoho, Faith, Pleasant Valley all score big in final tuneups for county tournament

Four Calhoun County teams won matches in straight sets Thursday in their final tuneups for the Calhoun County Tournament.

The third-ranked 4A Lady Wildcats capped a busy run-up to the Calhoun County Tournament with two more victories Thursday night, and its biggest reward just might be having Friday off.

They beat host Etowah 25-20, 25-15 and Weaver 25-11, 25-22, overcoming a sizable deficit in the second set with Weaver to do it.

“We’re not playing real well,” Saks coach Randy Law said. “I don’t know if we’re tired or not; we play just good enough to win.

“I look for them to step it up Saturday.”

Jordan Briskey led Saks (34-4) with 16 kills. Tayler Teague had nine kills and four aces, and served the final seven points against Weaver.

Mayia Northard had eight kills, Baylee Snider had seven, LaMonica Noel had five and Jaelyn Wilson had 31 assists.

PLEASANT VALLEY 2, GAYLESVILLE 0
PLEASANT VALLEY 2, SPRING GARDEN 0

Pleasant Valley swept Gaylesville 25-10, 25-3 and host Spring Garden 26-24, 25-12, but it wasn’t easy.

The fifth-ranked 3A Lady Raiders (25-5) fell behind Spring Garden, ranked No. 3 in 1A, by seven early and trailed 19-9 in the first set before roaring back.

“It’s not the sort of start we like,” PV coach Dana Bryant said. “On the plus side, the girls fought back and won. They refused to lose.”

Cammy Cochran had 14 kills, four aces, five digs and three blocks. Anna Bryant had nine kills, seven aces, 13 assists and five digs. Savannah Williams had seven digs, three aces, one kill, one block and four assists.

Madi Bentley had six aces and 14 digs. Leah Johnson had four kills and four digs. Blakely Malsey had one block, one kill and one dig. Michael Kendrick had four kills and three blocks. Taylor Williams had one ace, one dig and graded 70 percent on her serve receive.

FAITH CHRISTIAN 2, MUNFORD 0

Cornelia Simpson had 10 kills, 15 digs, five aces and six blocks as the Lady Lions (18-11) beat Moody 25-6, 25-18 and Munford 25-19, 25-23.

DONOHO 3, WELLBORN 0

Camille Fink continued her strong play, scoring 17 kills as the fourth-ranked 1A Lady Falcons (26-6) won 25-18, 25-15, 25-13.

Kayla Wallace had eight kills and six digs. Anna Marie Woodfin had 16 digs. Madison Gaines had 4 blocks and Katie Brown had 32 assists.

Fink now has 156 kills this season, Woodfin has 293 digs and Brown has 487 assists.
