ASWA Football Poll

Piedmont, Saks in the top five of their respective classifications; Piedmont visits Leeds in a top five showdown Thursday

By East Alabama Sports Today

Poll dynamics are a quirky thing, as the football teams in Calhoun County have discovered over the last few weeks.

Piedmont and Saks are the only county teams in their respective top 10s of the statewide prep football poll this week, but a case could be made for others.

Consider:

Alexandria is 4-0, has dominated every team it has played so far, has one of the top scoring offenses in Class 5A, one of the top scoring defenses in the state and has yet to break into the poll.

The Valley Cubs are receiving votes at least. But the way things have gone, being off this week, they probably won’t be ranked until the outcome of its game with Mortimer Jordan Oct. 2, and if they lose, they might not be this year.

Ohatchee received votes last week with a 1-2 record. The Indians won in a big way and didn’t even get consideration this week.

This week it’s Piedmont and Saks.

The Bulldogs are No. 3 in Class 3A. The Wildcats are No. 5 in 4A. Wellborn, one of the highest scoring teams is in the state, is receiving votes in 3A.

The poll does have a dynamic game involving a county team this week. Piedmont faces a ranked-team for the second week in a row. The Bulldogs travel to Leeds, the No. 4 team in Class 4A, Thursday night.

Piedmont is the second-highest scoring team in Class 3A (45.3 ppg). Leeds is ranked seventh in Class 4A in offense (39.2) and defense (15.0).

“We enjoy playing Leeds,” Piedmont coach Steve Smith said. “They’re a quality program and probably favored again to win the 4a championship. We know it’s a tough environment to go into and play – we’ve been down there several times — but really looking forward to that challenge and see where we stand against a team of that magnitude.”

The Bulldogs beat then No. 9-3A Glencoe last week to take the lead in their area. Glencoe dropped into the ‘receiving votes’ category this week.
