JACKSONVILLE – Quarterback Quen Veasley threw three touchdown passes and ran for the game-winning score early in the fourth quarter as the Golden Eagles rebounded from their season-opening loss with a 35-28 win over Weaver.

Veasley rushed for 43 yards on 16 carries, including an 8-yard run with 9:47 to play that broke a 28-28 tie. He also threw touchdown passes of 59 yards to Taye Ackles, 38 yards to Josh Glass and 47 yards to Nico Richmond that tied the game.

He finished the game completing 5 of 7 passes for 162 yards.

“Quen can run it and everybody knows it, but he can throw it, too,” Jacksonville coach Clint Smith said. “When somebody gives it to us, he does a good job of taking advantage of it.

“He did a good job leading us tonight. Every time you play some things are working and some things get shut down. Tonight, Quen stepped up, and Nico, too. All our guys did a great job tonight after a lot of adversity.”

Mitchell Baker rushed for three touchdowns and kicked a 22-yard field goal and eight extra points as the Falcons officially ushered in the Andy McWilliams coaching era with a lopsided victory.

Baker ran for 130 yards on seven carries as the Falcons rushed for 338 yards and gained nearly 400 total. His touchdowns covered 3, 48 and 58 yards. He also caught one pass for four yards.

Newly installed quarterback Ross Svensen completed 6 of 10 passes for 114 yards, rushed for 28 yards and scored each way. Garrett Steed scored three different ways.

The Falcons scored 38 points in the first half and opened a 45-0 lead before the Flame scored.

“I was happy with the improvement we have made from the jamboree game to where we were tonight,” McWilliams said, “but we have to build on that improvement and continue to prepare with focus and energy to be ready for the opponents we will face in region play.”

Piedmont 35, Cherokee County 20

CENTRE – Senior running back-defensive back Darnell Jackson accounted for three first-half touchdowns and quarterback Taylor Hayes accounted for two in the second as the third-ranked 3A Bulldogs won their opener.

Jackson rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns in the game and also scored the first touchdown of the night on a 25-yard fumble return. His touchdown runs covered 71 and 10 yards.

His scores came as the teams traded touchdowns throughout the first half with Piedmont taking a 20-14 lead into the break.

In the second half, Hayes connected on an 18-yard touchdown pass to Bayley Blanchard and ran 17 yards for the game’s final score.

Hayes finished with 145 yards on 26 carries and completed 4 of 10 passes for 79 yards.

Tyren Dupree was Cherokee County’s big weapon. He ran for one touchdown and threw for another. He was 16-of-25 passing for 172 yards. Brendan Bray had the Warriors’ other touchdown.

Gadsden City 41, Oxford 19

OXFORD – The Yellow Jackets’ offense made substantial gains over the week before, but they still didn’t have enough firepower to overcome the 7A Titans.

Quarterback Brody Syer threw for 184 yards on 13-of-26 passing and the Jackets rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns. Trey Franks rushed for 109 yards and two scored on 19 carries. Kevin Johnson had the other touchdown.

Querriun Mason had six catches for 138 yards and Jacoby McClendon had four for 24 yards.

The Jackets scored first, but trailed 21-13 at halftime.

“Our offense improved more than I thought they would in one week,” Oxford coach Ryan Herring said. “We couldn’t run the ball last week and we didn’t throw it a whole lot. This week we ran it decent, threw it decent and had some big plays.

“I think they knew Game One we didn’t do some things well and we had to improve and I think the kids really made it important to try to do that.”

Ranburne 43, Pleasant Valley 13

RANBURNE – Quarterback Dylan Wiggins threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as the seventh-ranked 2A Bulldogs spoiled the debut of Raiders’ coach Jonathan Nix (pictured).

Wiggins threw touchdown passes to Logan Otwell and Owen Smith and ran 23 yards for another score. He completed 13 of 18 in the game.

“Their quarterback is a great player,” Nix said. “We had him dead in the water and he flips the ball over to his back and there they went.”

The Bulldogs opened a 29-0 halftime lead and it was 36-0 before Pleasant Valley scored. Reagan King got the Raiders on the board with a 75-yard run against Ranburne’s first defense. Thomas Emory had the Raiders’ other touchdown on an 8-yard run.

“Reagan King had some nice runs and he has great speed,” Nix said. “As he learns the offense he is going to be a dynamic player.”

Ashville 59, White Plains 0

The Wildcats were done in by seven turnovers in coach Chris White’s first official game as head coach. Five of the turnovers occurred inside their own 25.
