Silver Lakes won the inaugural EA Sports Today Cup Friday with a convincing 13.5-1.5 victory over Anniston Country Club on the RTJ Trail team’s home course.

Silver Lakes, which surged to the No. 1 seed by beating ACC last month at Cane Creek, won all four of its matches Friday.

The teams of Brennan Clay-Steve Bailey and Ken Green-Tom Ganshaw both won 3-0. Alan Darnall and Bobby Luttrell won two points, while Ted Klimasewski and Tim MacTaggart closed out a strong tournament with 2.5 points.

“They were all pretty pumped,” Silver Lakes captain Clay said. “I was out there putting my stuff up and Bobby and Alan were going, ‘We got it. I think we got it.’ It was a lot of fun. I know how much fun they had.”

Klimasewski and MacTaggart finished as the winningest team in the summer-long intraclub matches (10 points), but their match Friday simply served to extend the score.

The match was clinched by the Green-Ganshaw victory. It was a shot of redemption of sorts for Green, who lost to Ryan Abernathy and John Lindsey 3-0 with a different partner at Cane Creek. Clay called them “the difference makers.”

“I played considerably better than I did the last time; they smoked us the first time,” Green said. “One advantage we had was playing our course. There were a couple times they misread some pretty severely, which you can do out here pretty quick.”

Ganshaw, the father of Gadsden CC director of golf and former Silver Lakes pro Matt Ganshaw, celebrated his 71st birthday during the victory.

The Country Club team, which held the overall lead through the first two rounds of the matches, got its points from Don Whitlow and John Carrozza (one point) and Tom Roberts and Bob Kennamer (0.5).

“We enjoyed it thoroughly; I’m glad we were in the championship match,” ACC captain and pro Jake Spott said. “We got blanked, but we gave it our all, they just played a lot better than we did. Nobody on my squad played poorly, we were just outplayed.

“When you get beat, that’s what you want to be able to say, that you got beat, not gave it up on your own. We’re looking forward to next year.”
