DYB ‘rookies’ ready for Oxford

OXFORD — More than 50 teams across four divisions will converge on Calhoun County next week for their Dixie Youth Baseball Rookie State Tournament.
Fifty-two teams in O-Zone, AAA, AA Machine Pitch and AA Coach Pitch divisions will be playing at the Earl Martin, Oxford Lake softball and Oxford High School softball complexes. Play begins Thursday.
“This is the first time it’s ever been here,” Dixie Youth District 2 director Tim Buce said. “I’m excited to have that many teams come to Oxford and hopefully everybody will enjoy themselves. I know we’ll have good baseball.”
The O-Zone and AA coach pitch divisions will play split brackets with the two winners meeting in a best-of-3 series for their state championship.
Meanwhile, the regular AA (coach pitch) state tournament starts July 10 in Prattville, the regular AAA tournament is July 17 in Decatur and the O-Zone tournament is July 17 in Centreville.
Alexandria and Pleasant Valley qualified for the AAA state tournament. Oxford Black and Alexandria qualified for the AA tournament. Oxford and Munford play for the O-Zone district title Monday in Jacksonville.
The Dixie Youth World Series is in South Carolina in August (O-Zone/AAA in Lexington Aug. 8-13, AA in North Myrtle Beach Aug. 2-6).
Opening ceremonies for the Rookie Tournaments are scheduled for noon Thursday at the Oxford High School football stadium.
