The 18th green at Cane Creek Golf Course was the scene of much drama Sunday in deciding both divisions of the Fort McClellan Credit Union Pro-Invitational.

Dalton Chandler tapped in a birdie putt on the 18th to complete an improbable comeback and win the amateur division of the Invitational. It was his first career win on the Calhoun Cunty Golf Tour.

Sapp made three birdies in a row coming back to his favorite part of the course to stretch his lead, but then had to make a tense seven-foot birdie putt on 18 to win the pro division and become the first multiple pro winner of the tournament. He also won in 2012.

Chandler was three shots behind Gary Wigington with five holes to play and two back with three to play, but Wigington bogeyed four of the last five holes and each of the last three.

Chandler shot 2-under-par 70 on Sunday for a 2-under 142 total. Wigington, the three-time reigning County Player of the Year, shot 76 to finish at 143.

All four events on the Calhoun County Golf Tour this season have produced a different winner.

Wigington’s woes down the stretch were a reprieve of sorts for Chandler, whose biggest wins prior to Sunday were a County High School title and a substate medalist. He shot 3-under on the front to close the gap and had a makable birdie putt on 11 to tie for the lead. He missed the putt, then lost a shot to the lead on each of the next two holes.

It was then the players came across the road from the Hollow that the comeback began.

That’s Sapp’s favorite part of the course as well. He came back across the road with a one-shot lead after Zach Portemont missed a four-foot birdie putt to tie the lead and birdied 14, 15 and 16 to stretch his lead to three shots. The putt on 16 was more than 45 feet.

Portemont birdied 17 and needed some luck on the par-5 18th to force a playoff. Portemont’s second shot was just off the right side of the green. Sapp, meanwhile, was short of the green in 3.

Sapp used his putter with his next shot and came up seven feet short. Portemont’s eagle chip ran past the hole, but he still had a birdie attempt, meaning Sapp had to make to avoid a playoff.

Sapp rammed the putt home and punctuated it with a fist pump. He finished with a 72 for a total 214. Portemont shot a final-round 69 and finished at 215.
