Faith clinches area

McDaniel goes for four goals in each of the Lions’ two area wins

By East Alabama Sports Today

The Faith Christian soccer team used the occasion of its Senior Day to take down two opponents Saturday and clinched its area championship.

The Lions beat Sacred Heart 10-0 and Collinsville 7-0 to finish area play 6-0. They allowed only one goal in those six area matches.

Seniors did all their scoring Saturday.

Tyler Johnson and Josiah McDaniel, two of the nine seniors recognized during ceremonies at the game, scored four goals each in the victory over Sacred Heart.

Two more seniors, Andrew Gattrell and Nathan Bedford, had the other two goals.

McDaniel scored four goals against Collinsville. Johnson scored twice and Gattrell had the other goal.

Caleb McCord recorded the shutouts in both games.

“Both matches were sloppy, but fun,” Faith coach Erik McDaniel said. “Our field had some major water issues, but athletics director Bradley Dawson was out on the field at 7:30 this morning working on it.”

Collinsville also was an emotionally spent team. One of its teachers was killed in a car accident.

“They played with heart, but they were definitely sad,” McDaniel said.

The Lions return to action Thursday against No. 1 Westminster at Oak Moutain to wrap up the regular season. They will host either Altamont or Fultondale April 28.

The other seniors recognized Saturday were John Bell, Ryan Crosby, manager Peck Mallory, Ruston Rigsby and Logan Williamson.
