Weaver tourney called for day

Officials plan to play Day 2 schedule on Saturday, forego championship round

By East Alabama Sports Today

The weather handed area baseball teams another loss Friday.

The rains that blew threw the area late Thursday forced officials to postpone all the Friday games of the Weaver Spring Break Tournament to Saturday.

Weaver coach David Beegle said Friday it was hoped they could resume around lunch Saturday and give all the teams at least one game. He said the possibility existed of having to cancel some games.

The situation has wiped out the possibility of a championship round.

The field was able to get four games in Thursday — Jacksonville defeated Weaver 9-5 and Wellborn 3-2 in 10 innings, Wellborn edged Saks 9-8 and Randolph County overwhelmed Saks 15-0.

Weaver was leading Randolph County 4-1 in the third inning when they had to give it up for the night. It had gotten so bad, Beegle said, pitchers were reduced to throwing only fastballs and it became difficult to field balls in the air.

His crew was working on the field Friday morning in an attempt to clear all the standing water in hopes of beating the expected overnight freeze.

Here is the day as scheduled:

Weaver vs. Saks
Saks vs. Jacksonville
Jacksonville vs. Randolph County
Randolph County vs. Wellborn
Wellborn vs. Weaver
