Calling runners to Centre

Preregistration for Run4Val 5K & Health Walk currently underway

By East Alabama Sports Today

Pre-registration for the second annual City of Centre Run4Val 5K and 1K Health Walk April 18 is currently underway at Odyssey Health Spa and Fitness.

The 5K will be run on a certified course and chip timed. The route is mildly challenging at the start as it climbs toward downtown Centre. The return to the finish is downhill, flat and fast.

Judge Jeremy Taylor set the course record in winning the men’s race in 20:19. Katie Pentecost won the women’s race in 22:36. Last year’s inaugural event drew a field of more than 130 runners.

The Health Walk has undergone a change. Organizers trimmed the distance to just over a half of a mile making it possible for anyone to enjoy. Walkers begin their jaunt on Armory Road and then turn right at the corner of Armory and Park Street.

After a slight incline, walkers will enjoy a gentle downhill that continues past the City swimming pool. Near the playground, participants encounter a minor slope that soon flattens out next to the ball field. A welcoming finish awaits just past the tennis courts.

Runners and walkers will begin simultaneously at 8 a.m.

Awards will be given to the top three overall male and female finishers as well as the top three in each age group (5-year age increments). Additional prizes will go to the individuals/teams who wear the most creative “Hero”-themed attire.

Entry fee is $25 ($20 for ARC/GRC members). Proceeds support scholarships in memory of Chief Val Courtney. Participants that register by April 1 are guaranteed to receive a race T-shirt.

Organizers offer an early packet pick-up on April 17 from noon-6 p.m. at the Odyssey Spa & Fitness Center, 1199 Chesnut Bypass in Centre
