Cubs finish in top 16; J’ville held in check

Alexandria beat Walker Valley, falls to Huntsville; Gold Eagles fall to Colbert Heights

By East Alabama Sports Today

GULF SHORES – Alexandria split its final two games in the Gulf Shores Classic Wednesday to finish in the top 16 of the massive tournament.

The Valley Cubs, ranked No. 8 in Class 5A, beat Walker Valley (Tenn.) 4-2, then fell to Huntsville, the No. 6 team in Class 7A, 7-1.

“This has been a great tournament for us,” Alexandria coach Brian Hess said. “Just the difference between when we first got down here, I think we’re leaving with a lot more confidence than we had coming in.

“To be able to beat some of the teams we’ve been able to beat and be competitive in this tournament, it’s really turned our season around.”

In the first game Jessica Shaw went 3-for-3 and drove in three of the Cubs’ four runs. Summer Watts had two hits.

“She had been in a semi-slump,” Hess said of Shaw, “but she was wearing it out this week.”

In the second game, Huntsville’s Tanner Robertson hit a grand slam in the first inning and Anna Jackson made it stand by holding the Cubs to two hits and striking out eight.

Shaw and Brianna Brown had Alexandria’s hits, and Brooke Ponder drove in its run in the second inning.

Colbert Heights 3, Jacksonville 0

The Golden Eagles wrapped up a tough week at the plate with their third shutout loss of the tournament.

Caroline Clark broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the fourth and Colbert Heights added an insurance run in the fifth.

Pitcher Reagan Stallings had two of Jacksonville’s three hits.

“The girls had a great opportunity to play some great competition,” Jacksonville coach C.J. Boyd said. “We took this week to work on us. We wanted to get better this week and that’s what we did. We are looking forward to the second half of the season.”
