OXFORD — It was a mixed bag of results for three Calhoun County teams as they competed in the Jacksonville High School Softball Tournament Saturday at Oxford Lake.

The competition was stiff and the teams glad to be back on the field as they’ve struggled to get in practice time or had games postponed over the last two weeks.

On Saturday, Jacksonville, Piedmont and Saks finally got back on the field.

Piedmont

The 3A Bulldogs were just one or two plays from being undefeated on the day. They played all schools in higher classifications and went 2-2. They had a strong showing in a 6-1 win over Jacksonville, and then followed it up with an 8-3 win over Gadsden City.

Torre Roberts scored the lone run in a 2-1 loss to Cleburne County.

The Piedmont bats went quiet in a 3-0 loss to Clay Central except for Kendell Pressley. The sweet-swinging left-hander went 3-for-3. The Bulldogs had four of their first five hitters reach base in the game, but a double play wiped out their chances to score any runs.

Clay Central scratched a few runs early and held on for the win. The outstanding play of shortstop Roberts kept the Bulldogs in the game all day long. She is arguably the best shortstop in the county.

Jacksonville

The Lady Golden Eagles went 1-3 for the day. They opened with a 4-1 win over Cleburne County and then fell 6-1 to Piedmont, 4-1 to Gadsden City and 5-0 to Horseshoe Bend.

Saks

The 4A Wildcats battled toe-to-toe with 6A Pell City but fell short 4-3 when the Panthers scored the winning run as Abby McKee just beat the throw to first on her grounder to Saks shortstop Daja Johnson.

Johnson banged out two hits, while Lamonica Noel, Annabelle Shelly and Laken Haynes added hits for the young Wildcats.

Saks went winless in four games, with tough losses to Horseshoe Bend (5-3), Clay Central (8-3) and Cleburne County (7-0).
