Cubs, Tribe grab County Tournament wins

Only two opening-round games played Friday, rest pushed back to today

By East Alabama Sports Today

ALEXANDRIA – Four players had at least two hits and three pitchers combined on a one-hitter as Alexandria opened the Calhoun County Baseball Tournament with an 11-0 victory over Faith Christian Friday.

The game Faith’s season opener and first under new head coach Owen Yarbrough.

Derrik Turner was a solid 3-for-3, while Riley Shaw, Dalton Cobb and Justin Whitey all went 2-for-3 for the Valley Cubs.

Dalton Warren started on the mound, but Shaw and sophomore Austin Goode finished it up. The only hit they allowed was senior Slade Owens’ line single to shallow center.

The Cubs now will host Ohatchee 3 p.m. today in the revamped tournament schedule.

Unplayable fields due to the recent inclement weather caused all but the first-round games at Alexandria to be postponed until today.

The updated schedule can be found below:

Ohatchee 8 Donoho 4

ALEXANDRIA – In the rematch of game Ohatchee won just a week ago, the Indians came out with no problems swinging the bat and hitting off Falcons’ Jesse McWilliams.

Brian Woodall went 3-for-4, Michael Cherry went 3-for-3 and Roger Widgeon went 2-for-3.

Donoho was shut out in that first meeting but on this day, Trey Brown, Brett Holmes and McWilliams all went 2-for-3 for the Falcons.
