The Calhoun County Golf Tour is about to embark on its ninth season with a new major sponsor in the fold.

East Alabama Sports Today has come on board to give the Tour three primary sponsors, joining longtime supporters Calhoun County Insurance and Xtreme Auto Spa/Alabama Homes.

“Local golf is very big and I think it’s an absolute necessity we give it the coverage it deserves,” said Kenny Wright, the EA Sports Today publisher who also plays on the Tour. ”The Tour is creating a brand of its own. I’m a firm believer this area has some of the best golfers in the state and it’s great to be affiliated with it.”

The Tour season gets underway with the Calhoun County Two-Man Championship March 14-15 at Cane Creek Golf Course and concludes with the Calhoun County Match Play Championship throughout the fall.

The race for Player of the Year, won by Xtreme Auto Spa owner Gary Wigington each of the last three years, begins with the King of the Hill tournament at Anniston Municipal Golf Course March 28-29.

The Cider Ridge Invitational follows, tentatively scheduled for April 25-26.

The other County Tour events are the Wilfred Galbraith Anniston Country Club Invitational May 15-17, the Fort McClellan Credit Union Pro-Invitational at Cane Creek June 5-7, the Calhoun County Championship at Silver Lakes June 27-28 and the Pine Hill Invitational July 25-26.

The Player of the Year race concludes in the 79th annual Calhoun County Championship Aug. 14-16 at Cane Creek.

During the course of the season, Tour players accrue points for Player of the Year based on their finishes and compete for statistical champion awards. The top 16 finishers in the season points standings qualify for the Calhoun County Match Play Championship.

Andrew Brooks defeated Wigington with an eagle on the final hole for last year’s Match Play championship.

Registration forms for the Tour are available at local courses or players may register at the early-season events.

The two-man Buddy Moore Tournament is Aug. 22-23 at Anniston Municipal Golf Course.

“The Calhoun County Golf Tour is rockin’ and rollin’,” Jeremy McGatha said. “We’re looking forward to a great year.”
