Tigers’ Mayfield takes top honors

Cleburne Co. soph outstanding wrestler in ‘Rumble,’ Alexandria finishes strong in Hayden, Oxford fourth in Hoover

HEFLIN — Tyler Mayfield had come so close so many times to winning his weight class in his team’s own wrestling tournament without any joy he was starting to wonder if it were ever going to happen.

It happened Saturday, and in a big way.

He not only did the Cleburne County sophomore win his class in the Rumble in the Jungle, he also was voted by the coaches the outstanding wrestler of the meet.

Mayfield completed a four-match sweep to the 152-pound title with an 18-4 major decision over Austin Foote of Madison County. He won his other three bouts by fall, running his season record to 15-1.

“That was cool because it was my first time ever winning it,” Mayfield said. “Getting this (most valuable wrestler award) makes it even more sweeter.

“I’m just proud I could perform for my home crowd and I look forward to doing it the next two years.”

Mayfield had won tournaments in Moody and Weaver earlier this season. He had been a finalist in his home tournament twice in his previous three years on the mat, but lost both by decision.

His Cleburne County teammate Alex Sandmann came close to joining him on the winner’s stand, but lost in the 220-pound final by ultimate tiebreaker. Still, his bout with Jeruel Hunter of Central-Phenix City was voted as the match of the meet.

“That was the toughest match I’ve ever wrestled in my life,” said Sandmann said, who figured he gave up 12 pounds to the Central senior. “At that point (in the tiebreaker) it’s all or nothing at all. I really don’t feel like I lost. Neither one of us should have after a match like that.”

For the second time in less than a week, Scott Peavey brought his Madison County team back to his old stomping grounds and returned home a champion. The Tigers, who won the Valley Cub Invitational on Monday, won the team title here by five points over Smiths Station. Central-Phenix City was third, followed by Weaver and Cleburne County.

The champions had two winners, two seconds and three thirds.

“It’s nice to come back home,” said Peavey, the former Wellborn football and wrestling coach. “We brought nine kids, didn’t think we had a chance and they wrestled their hearts out; what else can we ask for?”

Weaver’s Nick Souder (106) and Caleb Allison (285) were the only Calhoun County wrestlers to win titles. Souder beat Ohatchee’s Jimmy Young in his final, while Allison beat Piedmont’s Jamie Crutcher, who handed Ohatchee’s Hunter Barclay his first loss of the season earlier in the day.

Cubs bounce back in Hayden

HAYDEN – Alexandria bounced back with two wins on the second day of the Chris Nunn Duals, including one over a team that beat it the day before.

The Valley Cubs lost to Mortimer Jordan in their final match of pool play 44-21, then defeated 6A Center Point 28-12 and Oak Grove 36-24. They lost to Oak Grove on Friday.

“They just didn’t give up,” Alexandria coach Frank Hartzog said. “They went out there and wrestled hard the matches we had.”

Fletcher Swindall and Lane Trapp both posted 7-0 records in the tournament. Anthony Knop (152) scored the most impressive victory of the day when he beat Center Point’s Nic Starks with an escape in the final 15 seconds of double overtime.

“That was awesome,” Hartzog said. “His brother (Christian) usually gets the attention … so it was exciting to see him get that win and basically seal it up so we won. He forced the action.”

King, Lee lead Oxford fourth in Hoover

HOOVER – Matt King (145) and Hunter Lee (182) both finished first in their respective weight divisions in title bouts that could be potential state championship matchups and helped Oxford place fourth in the Scott Rohrer Invitational.

King’s 9-6 double-overtime win over Southside’s Noah Bradford was voted the tournament’s best match. Lee defeated Ryan Grider of Scottsboro 11-4.

Hayden Carpenter (113), Mason Blakeney (120) and Jacob Shake (160) all finished second in their divisions. Wesley Slick (106) finished third.

Vestavia Hills won the event.
