White Plains vies for 3rd today

Boys roundup: Alexandria beats Glencoe for third time, tensions erupt

By East Alabama Sports Today

FREEPORT, Fla. – White Plains played perhaps its most complete game of the season and beat Pleasant Grove 72-44 to advance to today’s third-place game in the Sandestin Beach Basketball Blowout.

Jerod Guthrie had another strong game, scoring 21 points. Nathan Gilbert had 15 and Murphy Doss had 12.

Guthrie has 16 in the first half as the Wildcats opened a 35-14 lead. Gilbert scored all his points in the middle two quarters as they stretched the lead to 52-27. Gilbert was 7-of-7 from the foul line.

The Wildcats (13-3), who lost a close game to an undefeated opponent in their tournament opener, will play St. Paul today at 1 p.m. The game will be carried on WTDR-92.7 FM.

GLENCOE – Dakota Kelley scored 19 points and Caleb Young added 11 as the Valley Cubs beat the Yellow Jackets for the third time this season and second time in eight days.

The Cubs, the presumptive No. 1 seed in the upcoming Calhoun County Tournament playing their seventh game in 12 days, seized control with a 26-9 third quarter behind 11 points from Kelley. Alton Davis scored seven of his nine points in the first quarter to help them open a 17-12 lead.

“It’s kind of tough to beat a team three times – and in about a three-week stretch,” Alexandria coach Jason Johnson said. “We struggled a little bit early. Our legs are about gone. We’re kind of weary, b ut we fought through it.”

Frustrations boiled over late in the game with an altercation on the floor after two players got tangled up near the Glencoe bench. While the craziness ensued, the Alexandria players – mindful of penalties from a similar situation a year ago – stayed glued to their bench. Witnesses, including Alexandria officials, said no punches were thrown.

“We’ve trained our guys no matter what happens on the floor you stay seated,” Johnson said. “I really don’t know exactly how it started … but it was kind of over-exaggerated for it being called a fight.”
