J’ville sweeps Pell City

Golden Eagles boys, girls win openers in Lincoln tournament; Ohatchee girls win

By East Alabama Sports Today

LINCOLN — Junior Cam Horton scored 30 points for the second game in a row Monday night as Jacksonville beat Pell City 60-51 for its first win of the season in the Lincoln Thanksgiving tournament.

Horton, who also had 30 in the Golden Eagles’ season-opening loss to Alexandria, was 10 of 20 from the field, including 4 of 11 from 3-point range. He scored more than Pell City’s top two scorers combined.

“Cam is a pure shooter and he shoots a true jump shot,” Jacksonville coach Ryan Chambless said. “He’s 6-1 and really elevates when he shoots. He can get his shot off against a lot of people because of the way he jumps.”

Sid Thurmond, who also had 30 in the Alexandria game, added eight points Monday and Savon Parker grabbed nine rebounds. Horton also had five steals and eight rebounds.

“Him and Sid both are playing together a lot better,” Chambless said of Horton. “We’ve got two point guards with both of them on the floor and that’s a tough matchup because they’re both really good guards.

“They both had 30 (the last game) and we lost the game; we’ve got to have a lot more balance. I think once we all figure out what’s a good shot and what’s not a good shot or when’s a good time to take a 3 and … just the flow of the game, those guys are going to be really successful.”

In the girls’ game, Jacksonville played stout defense for the second win in a row, beating Pell City 56-26. The Golden Eagles (2-1) held Alexandria to 21 points in their first win.

“One thing we’ve gotten better at versus our first game is we backed off the ball a little bit and contained the dribble,” Chambless said. “We’re not over-pressuring and we’re doing a better job of really just containing the ball and not getting beat off the dribble.

“That’s something that hurt us against Gadsden City. It’s something we talked about that we needed to fix and I think the girls did a good job fixing that. That’s really helped us a lot.”

Angel Kidd led Jacksonville with 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals. Dasia Kirksey had 10 points, while Virginia Poe and Sierra Stone had eight each. Stone also grabbed nine rebounds.

The Golden Eagles play Ashville in the tournament on Tuesday and wrap up their portion of the event Wednesday against Lincoln.

In another tournament game, Wellborn defeated Weaver 36-31 for third place.
