Donoho jumped county rival Sacred Heart and returned to No. 1 in the Class 1A state high school volleyball poll. The Falcons were the preseason No. 1.

There was some debate neither local team would be in the top spot after the weekend’s Donoho Classic. The Falcons beat Sacred Heart in a midweek match, but Meek beat the Falcons in the tournament’s pool play, then beat Sacred Heart in the Gold Bracket semifinals before falling in the championship match.

Still, when the poll was released earlier this morning Donoho was No. 1, Sacred Heart No. 2 and Meek No. 6.

Seven of the top eight seeds in the Calhoun County Volleyball Tournament were in the poll. Only sixth-seeded White Plains (15-9) was missing.

The tournament seeds in the poll include No. 1 Oxford (6A No. 9), No. 2 Jacksonville (4A No. 3), No. 3 Alexandria (5A No. 6), No. 4 Donoho, No. 5 Saks (4A No. 5), No. 7 Pleasant Valley (3A No. 9) and Sacred Heart.

“I always hope our county is as strong as it can be across the board,” Jacksonville coach David Clark said. “I think in the past we’ve traditionally had a very good county (for volleyball). If you could get through our county, then you probably had a pretty good team and I think we’re getting back to that.

“I don’t think it’s been quite the level across the board that it was in the past, but I think we’re trying to get closer.”
