Donoho up, Piedmont down

UPDATE: Falcons in highest spot since 2007, Piedmont out of Top 5 for only fourth time since 2010

By East Alabama Sports Today

Donoho rose and Piedmont fell, while Saks and Jacksonville remained the same in this week’s Alabama Sports Writers Association high school football poll.

Donoho, which has started the season with four straight shutouts, rose to No. 5 in the Class 1A poll. It ties for the Falcons’ highest ranking ever and highest since being No. 5 on Oct. 10, 2007 (6-0).

The Falcons remain one of only two teams in the AHSAA yet to allow a point. They host 2A Fayetteville (2-2) Friday. The Wolves have scored 95 points in four games. The teams haven’t played since 2009.

“The shutouts and ranking, I think it’s certainly good for team morale,” Donoho coach Shannon Felder said. “I think the guys enjoy it and love trying to get a shutout and the challenge to come up with a plan and of the rankings the boys take a lot of pride knowing their work is being recognized.

“From a coaching standpoint it’s good, but it’s not my focus. My focus is not on shutouts or rankings, it’s trying to get our players getting better every week and improving in all phases of the game.”

Piedmont fell to No. 6 in the Class 3A poll after suffering a back-and-forth 31-28 loss to now-No. 4 Glencoe. It’s only the fourth time since the end of the 2010 season the Bulldogs have been ranked worse than fifth.

The Bulldogs host unanimous Class 4A No. 1 Leeds Thursday night looking to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time since 2006.

Meanwhile, Saks and Jacksonville remained Nos. 3 and 5, respectively, in Class 4A.

Nearby, Ranburne is No. 8 in Class 2A and Ragland is No. 4 in Class 1A.

Statewide, Hoover returned to No. 1 in Class 7A after its third straight win to get over .500 and Gadsden City’s win over former No. 1 Bob Jones.

In the rest of the classes, Class 5A St. Paul’s remains a unanimous No. 1, while the AISA’s Edgewood Academy has 30 of 31 votes. The other No. 1s are Spanish Fort (6A), Madison Academy (3A), Fyffe (2A) and Brantley (1A).
