Oxford edges closer to Top 10

Wellborn, Saks maintain their preseason ranks, setting up huge non-region meeting Friday

Oxford’s season-opening victory moved it closer to inclusion in the Class 6A Top 10 and Piedmont’s preseason loss in the Champions Challenge cost it a spot as the first regular-season high school football poll was released Tuesday night.

Oxford opened its season with a balanced attack that led to a convincing victory at Southside. The Yellow Jackets had only one point in the preseason poll, but picked up 12 after their victory and were just seven points shy of breaking into the Top 10.

The Jackets visit Gadsden City, the No. 9 team in Class 7A, Friday night.

Piedmont lost a tight 14-8 decision to Dadeville in the exhibition Champions Challenge and fell one spot to No. 3 in Class 3A, jumped by a T.R. Miller team that won its first game. Madison Academy lost its opener to Leeds on a last-second field goal, but remained No. 1 in the classification.

There were no unanimous selections for the first time since the final poll of 2011.

Predictably, Alexandria dropped out of the Class 5A Top 10 after its season-opening loss at Jacksonville. The Valley Cubs, No. 9 in the preseason poll, received 16 points, 10 shy of staying in the Top 10. Jacksonville, meanwhile, received votes in the Class 4A poll.

Wellborn maintained its preseason No. 5 ranking in Class 3A and Saks maintained its No. 6 ranking in Class 4A, setting up a huge season opener for both teams Friday night at Saks.

Donoho received votes in the Class 1A poll.
